GROWN FOLKS TALKING

Grown Folks Talking is a program that provides support for parents. The objectives of Grown Folks Talking are to foster the sharing of successful child-rearing techniques among parents; offer valuable resources to assist parents in navigating the challenges of raising children; and establish a nurturing space for parents to gain insights and wisdom from each other's experiences. Parental support is guided by Dr. Joyce Epstein's six pillars of parental involvement which involve helping all families establish home environments to support children as students; designing effective forms of school-to-home and home-to-school communications about school programs and children's progress; recruiting and organizing parent help and support; providing information and ideas to families about how to help students at home with homework and other curriculum-related activities, decisions, and planning; including parents in school decisions, developing parent leaders and representatives; and identifying and integrating resources and services from the community to strengthen school programs, family practices, and student learning and development. Outreach efforts may include group sessions, individual meetings, and the dissemination of information and resources.
